By Lane and Kay Finley. DVD, 87 minutes, PAL and NTSC. This is the first of a series of DVDs that are making us very excited! Lane and Kay Finley are an experienced cruising couple, Lane is American and Kay a Kiwi, and this DVD is the first of a series planned to deal with all aspects of blue water cruising - from armchair to port entry. Together the couple have a much to share, starting with people dreaming of blue water cruising all the way through to those on the verge of setting off; later DVDs will interest cruisers who want more knowledge, both of the technical aspects of cruising and also about places to go. This first DVD is a mix of very attractive seascape and landscape photography, with recognisable yachtspeople talking about the concepts of cruising. Technically the DVD is well edited and avoids the copious use of "talking heads", and focus on the interviewer. Many interviewees are internationally known New Zealand and overseas designers and cruisers in their own right, and a variety of contrasting personal views are expressed. The DVD divides the topic into five sections:
-Choosing the right hull,
-Choosing the best rig,
-Sail inventory,
-A vessel's eco system,
-Safety considerations - liferaft and helicopter rescues.
The exciting point about this DVD we believe is its general audio-visual appeal. Unlike others it suits the armchair sailor - the dreamer. Whether it stimulates the viewer into spending the next few years getting under sail (or power), or simply remains as one of life's best expectations - this DVD will always be a best friend.
